Custom Hoodies for Scouts, Guides and Youth Groups: What Every Group Leader Should Know

September 25, 2026

September marks the start of the new programme year for Scout groups, Guide units and youth clubs across the UK. Leaders are recruiting new members, planning activity programmes and working out what the group is going to wear for the months ahead. Custom hoodies for youth groups are a popular and practical answer, but getting the order right takes more thought than most leaders expect the first time round. Here's everything you need to consider before you start.

Why Custom Hoodies Work So Well for Youth Groups

A well-made group hoodie does more than keep young people warm. It creates a genuine sense of belonging, makes your group instantly recognisable on trips and at public events, and gives members something to feel proud of wearing. For leaders, there's a practical dimension too: spot your group in seconds on a busy campsite or at a crowded community event when everyone's wearing the same kit.

Youth group hoodies also tend to get far more use than leavers' hoodies. They're worn to weekly meetings, on residential trips, at community activities and often to school on non-uniform days. That longevity makes the investment genuinely worthwhile for most groups.

Choosing the Right Garment

Hoodies are the default choice for most youth groups, and for good reason. A classic pullover hoodie in a medium-weight fabric (around 300gsm) is warm enough for outdoor activities, durable enough for regular wear, and available in a range of cuts to suit different ages and body shapes.

A few things to consider before settling on a garment:

Weight. A lighter-weight hoodie is fine for indoor meetings or milder weather, but if your group spends time outdoors, camping or doing activities year-round, a heavier-weight option holds up better and does a more reliable job of keeping people warm.

Pullover or zip. Pullovers are generally cheaper, give a tidier look and work better for embroidery or large chest and back designs. Zip hoodies cost a little more but suit leaders who want something slightly smarter. Most groups go with the pullover for a unified look across all ages.

Age range. Youth groups often span a wide range of ages, sometimes from seven or eight years old right through to adult leaders. If you're ordering for members and leaders on the same order, think about whether a consistent style works across all age groups, or whether adults and juniors need different fits.

Sorting Out Your Colours and Logo

This is where things can get unexpectedly complicated. Some Scout groups, Guide units and youth organisations have official colours linked to their movement, district or county. It's worth checking internally before committing to a particular colour so your group hoodie doesn't clash with organisational guidelines.

If your group has an existing logo, badge or crest, bring the artwork into the conversation early. The format matters. A clean vector file (AI, EPS or SVG) gives the sharpest, most flexible result. A photograph of a badge or a low-resolution image lifted from a website is more difficult to work with, though a good supplier can often recreate simple designs from scratch if you can describe what you need.

For groups without any existing artwork, a clean text-based design with your group name, county and perhaps a founding year can look excellent and costs nothing extra to produce.

Print or Embroidery for Youth Group Clothing

Both decorating techniques work well on hoodies; the best choice depends on your design and your priorities.

Embroidery looks professional and traditional. It's particularly effective for crest-style logos, circular badge designs and anything with a classic, structured feel. It handles repeated washing extremely well, which matters for clothing that gets heavy use week after week. The limitation is detail: very fine lines and very small text can lose sharpness in the embroidery process.

Screen printing or DTG (direct to garment) printing allows for larger designs, more colours and finer detail than embroidery. A bold group name across the back, a large badge-style graphic or a detailed illustration all work well with print. It's also typically more cost-effective for bigger quantities.

Many youth groups use a combination approach: a small embroidered logo or group name on the chest, and a printed design across the back. It's a smart solution that balances a professional finish with real versatility.

Getting Sizes Right When Your Group Spans All Ages

This is the part that trips up most group leaders placing their first custom clothing order. Youth groups often need to order across both youth and adult size ranges simultaneously, which complicates things considerably.

Don't rely on members or parents to self-report sizes without proper guidance. Provide a sizing guide with actual chest measurements and ask for those, not a vague "medium" or "large". A twelve-year-old's idea of what size they wear can vary enormously from what they actually need.

Allow for growth, particularly in younger members. A hoodie that sits slightly loose in October will still fit comfortably in April. One that's too tight from day one will frustrate parents within weeks.

Collect sizes at least a week or two before your actual order deadline. This gives you time to chase the inevitable stragglers without holding up the whole group.

Planning Your Order Timeline

The most common mistake youth group leaders make is leaving it too late. Once you've approved your final design, a typical custom clothing order needs at least two to three weeks to produce, depending on quantities and complexity. If you need hoodies before Christmas or for a specific residential, work backwards from that date and set your own internal deadline a couple of weeks earlier.

September and October are the right time to get things moving for most autumn and winter activities. The alternative is arriving at a campsite full of cold young people wearing a mismatched collection of old kit, because the order slipped everyone's mind until the week before.
